AMEDD BOLC Arrival

Traveling to new parts of the world never gets old.

Being afforded the opportunity to travel as part of a career was a major contributor to selecting this career field. When I arrive at a new destination, I scan the entire area and compare it to places the feel familiar. I remember driving through farm land and seeing San Antonio come into view for the first time and felt a sense of excitement.

All I’ve known about this city was that it was the home to the San Antonio Spurs, the team that had had their way with my Utah Jazz for years. As I drove through the city and interacted with its inhabitants, I experienced their southern hospitality. The people are some of the friendliest I’ve met. I was also quick to learn about Texan pride. Texans are wildly proud of their state, more so than any other state I’ve visited. Lastly, San Antonio is known as “Military City USA,” And for good reason. San Antonio is home to various military branches, a VA, and other DOD functions. Because of their culture, employment opportunities, and politics, many Veterans elect to retire in San Antonio. Believe me, I still consider the idea.

I had arrived to San Antonio a day earlier than my orders mandated, which afforded the opportunity to explore the city. Naturally, I visited the River Walk. I was surprised that I would need to wear a t-shirt on January 5thas the weather was a pleasant 70 degrees.

The following day I checked into BOLC at the hotel listed on my welcome email. I was assigned an individual room where I would live for the next three months. This was a pleasant upgrade from the barracks which I was residing in DCC. I had an individual room with bathroom and kitchen. I also noticed the increase in autonomy. We no longer needed to be marched around, overseen, or told what to do constantly. It felt nice to feel a little bit like an adult again. The following morning BOLC officially began with a formation at 0400.
